30 Days To A Healthier, More Fitter You Series! (Overcoming Exercise Barriers And Excuses)

what's your excuseThose who think they have no time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” ~Edward Stanley

If you are like most people you have told yourself dozens of times that tomorrow you are going to start exercising!

Yet, tomorrow has come and gone, and you still haven’t moved.

So, what’s holding you back? What excuse seems fitting today?

It’s now time to face your excuses head-on so that you can overcome them and choose to live a healthier, happier lifestyle.

As a Spiritual Practitioner of Healthy Living, Personal Trainer and Lifestyle Modification Coach, I have helped many people overcome their exercise barriers.

These are five of the most common excuses for skipping exercise along with ways to combat them.

Excuse #1: I Don’t Have Time!

Really?

If you think that you don’t have time for exercise now – just think of all the time you’ll be spending in the doctor’s office down the road.

If you don’t take care of your body with some form of moderated exercise – your body will eventually break down with disease, illness, injury and your entire life will then be consumed with doctor visits and taking care of your body.

If you think that you need an hour or two ever day to exercise then I’m giving you a new revelation!  That’s right, a new revelation!

My company name is GenaLivings.com – Healthy Living, NOT GenaLivings.com – Extreme Living!  Lol!

Healthy Living is a practice which focuses on consciously choosing to give ourselves the gift of health, of well-being, of unconditional love and self care.

Healthy Living also means that you take the necessary steps to make these practices part of your daily routine.

Exercise doesn’t have to be an extreme sport, you just have to find some fun ways to move your body and get your heart pumping!

For example, if you like to watch TV at night, get off the couch and move your body during the commercial breaks.

Working out for 5 minutes, four times a day, is just as beneficial as working out for 20 minutes a day!  Just get up and move your body!

A good example for a short five minute workout is to perform a few jumping jacks, push ups and squats.  It’s easy, beneficial, keeps your body toned and it doesn’t take too long.

You can also keep some light weights handy in a very visible location where you will be reminded to pick them up and do some arm curls or shoulder presses a few times a day.

Excuse #2: I’m Too Fat Or I’m Too Out-Of-Shape!

Really?

Unless your physician has forbidden exercise, then it’s very unlikely that this excuse has any validity.

If you are extremely out-of-shape, then you simply need to start with baby steps.

Walking is always a great place to start. You may have to start with just five minutes and that’s okay.

You can gradually add more time each week. If walking is not an option, then you could try some low impact pool exercises.

At the very least, you can start by getting active while sitting.

There are many beneficial strength training exercises you can do while sitting.

Excuse #3: Exercise Is Too Hard!

Really?

When you are really feeling tired and can’t imagine doing any form of exercise, start by doing something that is ridiculously easy.

Stand up and move your arms in circles.  Do some stretching.  Walk around the house.

As your circulation picks up you will be amazed at all the extra energy you will have.

Once that feeling kicks in you can do something a little more challenging.

Don’t feel like you have to kill yourself every time you exercise.

Excuse #4: I Don’t Have Any Exercise Equipment!

Really?

Nice try again, but it doesn’t require special equipment to get your heart pumping.

Don’t underestimate what you can do with things that are already in your house.

For example, if you have a few stairs in your house then you’ve got an awesome way to get your heart rate up through walking or running the stairs.

If you don’t own any weights pick up some food cans or some milk jugs and use them as dumbbells.

I live in a forest so I often use small tree logs as dumbbells.

Take your dog for a walk or run.

Try a few push-ups and tricep dips and you’ll quickly realize how hard your body has to work when just using your own body weight.

Excuse #5 Exercise Is Boring!

Really?

One way that I like to exercise is by dancing around my house and I guarantee you – it’s not boring!   It’s not exactly “pretty” either but it’s far from boring, especially when I get my husbby involved!!

Variety really is the spice of life so find something fun and something that you enjoy

Fore example, if you enjoy exercising with others find a partner or sign up for a fun fitness class.

When you find yourself making an excuse not to exercise, read through some of the above tips again.

Keep reminding yourself of all the many benefits that exercise provides: proper circulation, assimilation, elimination and stimulates the secretion of mood enhancing endorphins (happy feel-good hormones!)

Tomorrow we will talk about rejecting the mainstream crowd and getting comfortable just doing exercises that are healthy, fun and comfortable for you, regardless of what the other people might say about it!

Healthy Living Exercise Prayer:Exercise Prayer

Dear God

I know that committing myself to building a stronger, healthier body is one of the most rewarding things I can do because building my body is building a better life for myself and all the people around me.

As I embark on my new wellness journey, guide me to embrace this process and find peace in the simplicity of my wonderful new practice.

I give thanks in gratitude for all that is!

Amen

So what is your excuse for not exercising?  I’d love to hear back from you!

  5. Dear Gena,

This is another great post! I had to giggle a couple of times while reading it.

Some of the excuses we all use or have used are really just silly when you really look at them.

I love the “don’t have time”, when most people spend 4 – 5 hours a day!!!! watching TV. OMG!

I also love the “dance around the house”….I do that!

    Talk about simple and easy!

I love your concepts and it is amazing as this very much aligns with my thoughts and my upcoming new programs and today’s post.

    Great minds………….

    🙂

Honestly, I could have listed “at least” twelve more EXCUSES on “why” people can’t exercise! LOL!
Over the years, I’ve heard it ALL and I’ve challenged it ALL!
For this particular article I just chose to list the “TOP” five excuses that I hear repeated over and over again.

I have personally come to realize that living a healthy lifestyle does not require much – it only requires that YOU DO IT!

Indeed….. Great minds do think alike! 😉

As always, thank you so very much for commenting!

      Healthy blessings,
      Gena 🙂

  6. My excuse until yesterday was that I couldn’t exercise because I had a baby. Well today I finally did it… I did a real 30 minute work-out (Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown) for the first time since before I got pregnant (almost a year and a half ago now!) My son wasn’t very happy by the end of it, but I’m hoping it’s something we can make work on a regular basis, because going for walks every day just isn’t cutting it anymore!

  7. Hey Gena,

You really nailed it! I consider myself a health nut and an exercise buff so I agreed with all the truths you spoke.

    Keep up the great posts.

  8. Dammit, you present a powerful argument! You have shot my best excuses down in flames 🙁 I keep putting off starting an exercise regime having got out of the habit. I do dance around the house quite a lot, and I’ve got a hula hoop I thought I would start using, but the only exercise I get from that is from bending over to pick it up. You have found my Achilles heel! On the bright side we have friends staying with us this weekend who are exercise fiends and they’re dragging us out for a walk in the morning. Even if it’s raining apparently. Looking forward to finding out more good easy ways to incorporate exercise in my life from you tomorrow. If I survive the coastal walk that is. 😉

    • Hello Andrea!

      I love it!! 🙂 🙂
Stay with me on this series! We are going to have some FUN!!

      Healthy blessings,
      Gena 🙂

  9. Hi Gena!

I love how you debunked all the excuses! I remember when I was a trainer…if a client start skipping out, I’d call or send a quick note, saying, “This is your Conscience calling…” and see where their mindset was so that I could get them past their excuses. Ha Ha…worked like a charm all the time.

Well, yesterday I went for a run…it wasn’t pretty after running that half marathon, but I pushed through. And today we went for a strenuous hike for a couple of hours (I’m feeling it now!).

I’m loving your “Fitlosophy” and “Fitivities” !!!
    Blessings.

I love your terminology relating to Fitlosophy and Fitivities – NICE!!!!! I LIKE it!!! 🙂

  10. Love it! It is so easy to make excuses, but the quote at the beginning speaks volumes. Thanks Gena!

  11. Hi Gena,

Great post! Thank goodness I suffer from the opposite issue; working out like such a beast that I become physically exhausted lol! Feeling that way today, have not experienced this for YEARS. So resting up, sleeping, and working for like 2 hours here in Bangalore 😉

    Thanks for sharing!

Two hours is a lot of exercise but as long as you enjoy it and it makes you feel physically empowered then keep up the good work my friend!!
I’m glad that you are resting up today and giving your body a rest. I really like when people are in-tune with their own body wisdom!
