How to start building a more fulfilling—and happy life!

purpose“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it fearlessly.” ― Steve Maraboli

Okinawa is the southernmost region of Japan and consists of thousands of tiny islands dotting the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Those islands happen to be the home of some of the healthiest and happiest people on the planet.

There are many reasons, of course, but one of the most important is that Okinawans have a strong sense of purpose.

Okinawans are known for maintaining a positive outlook on life and for pursuing their ikigai, which is a concept that means “reason for being” or “reason for waking up in the morning.”

Whether it be taking care of their grandchildren, working in the community, tending to a garden, or anything in between, each person has an ikigai.

And as their long life spans reveal, having a sense of purpose is critical for your health and happiness.

How do you start building a more fulfilling—and happy life?

By examining what your priorities are and understanding what gives your life meaning and purpose.

Think about what your life would look like if you could organize it by your deepest values and priorities.

Check out the list below to evaluate your life values, and then pick at least one that you would like to work on.

  3. Hi Gena. Great post! Life without purpose is by its very definition meaningless, and who wants to live a life with no meaning? A sense of purpose gives us a reason to get out of bed in the morning. I spent quite a lot of time years ago trying to find my life purpose. I was on a quest to find out what I was meant to be doing. All the time I was looking for something rather grandiose, something that would change the world, but I realised actually I was missing the point. To have a purpose in life doesn’t necessarily mean something big, and quite frankly to me at the time therefore unachievable, but something much more basic. My purpose is to be happy. Might sound a bit lame to some, but when I’m happy, my vibration is high, and it affects those around me. In my own little way, I am making a difference in the world, just by being happy. Blessings, Andrea
